COSMELAN® is a non-inflammatory, 28-day depigmentation treatment that specifically targets pigmentation by inhibiting tyrosinase, an enzyme in the melanin formation process. At the same time, COSMELAN® accelerates cellular turnover to remove dead skin cells and lift pigment. Because COSMELAN® produces no internal inflammation and does not alter the pH of the skin, it produces a safe outcome for all melasma and hyperpigmentation patients, including those with darker or olive-colored skin tones. This treatment is very effective for fading heavy pigmented spots, hyperpigmentation, chloasma, melasma, acne scars, uneven skin tone, and sun damaged skin without affecting your natural skin tone. Your skin will continue to improve with the use of the maintenance products.
COSMELAN® is a non-invasive treatment. COSMELAN® does not require the use of anesthetics. The entire process should take less than a half hour, depending on the treatment area.

Inhibition of Tyrosinase - Blocking the cycle of melanogenesis
Lightening and exfoliation of epidermal pigment
Lightening and inhibiting of dermal pigment
COSMELAN® has the ability to inhibit an enzyme (tyrosinase) that is involved in the process of causing skin discoloration. This mid-deep level peel is designed to remove the most superficial, outermost layers of the skin by the application of chemical agents, creating a light burn in order to stimulate the cell renovation and re-epithelization, to obtain an even cutaneous tone and/or the total elimination of melasma. It gently breaks up the pigment on the surface of the skin, and suppresses the pigment deep within so it does not surface. This treatment allows deeper layers of fresh and untouched skin to be revealed.
To address these blemishes, the COSMELAN® Depigmentation Peel uses several proven skin brightening ingredients, including pharmaceutical-grade hydroquinone for skin lightening. The MD formula is compounded with 8% Hydroquinone. The complex formula uses 51 active ingredients to treat hyperpigmentation, including Azelaic Acid, Kojic Acid, Arbutin, Phytic Acid and other numerous tyrosinase inhibitors, lightening agents, anti-inflammatory and hydrating ingredients, to maximize the inhibition of the melanogenesis process and paralyze melanin production. So it literally blocks the body’s biological process that causes skin discoloration and prevents it from recurring.

The COSMELAN® treatment will occur in two phases. Phase 1 starts in the clinic and Phase 2 continues at home.
During the first phase, our treating provider will gently cleanse, tone, and prep the treatment area before applying the COSMELAN® 1 mask. The entire process should take less than a half hour (depending on the treatment area), and you will return home while still wearing the COSMELAN® 1 mask. This treatment is performed in a safe, sterile and precise manner.
Our treating provider cleanses your skin with the Gel Cleanser to remove excess oils and debris without altering the skin's pH balance.
Our treating provider tones your skin with Hydratonic, preparing the skin, supporting the pervasion and absorption of active ingredients of the creams and serums. Hydratonic also helps to relieve congestion and to stabilize pH balance.
Our treating provider degreases, cleanses, exfoliates the skin with professional degreasing solution.
Our treating provider protects sensitive areas with the Mesolips Protector.
Our treating provider applies ¾ of the COSMELAN® 1 jar to your entire face. Most patients report experiencing only a mild tingling sensation. You will go home with the mask applied for 8-12 hours. The exact amount of time will be determined by our treating provider. Home Care instructions will be given to you on the day of treatment.
The second phase will begin at home. Phase 2 involves COSMELAN® 2, an at-home maintenance regimen over the next few months, which will help sustain your smooth skin tone and to prevent the dark spots from returning. COSMELAN® 2 cream boosts the depigmenting result of COSMELAN® 1, keeping the production of new melanin under control and preventing the reappearance of the pigmentation.

The COSMELAN® Depigmentation Peel consists of two peel sessions:
Initial Session
Touch-up Session.
During the Initial Session, the COSMELAN® peel will be applied to your full face.
During the Touch-up Session, the COSMELAN® peel will be applied as a spot treatment to stubborn areas, 21-30 days after Initial Session.
Everyone’s skin profile is different, so the number of treatments and results can vary from patient to patient. A wide-range of factors including age, genetics, hormones, lifestyle, health, diet, metabolism, weight loss or weight gain, skin type, sun exposure, and other circumstances not related to COSMELAN® can affect your treatment outcome and diminish the effects of any aesthetic treatment after a while. Our treating provider creates a custom treatment plan to best achieve your desired, long-term results.

Immediately after the treatment, you may experience a brief stinging sensation and your face may appear slightly red in appearance similar to a mild sunburn, temporary redness and warm to touch from flushing of the skin. If the neck and décolletage are treated, the redness might last slightly longer. Please note that with an intensive treatment, a peeling effect and some redness are to be expected and will normalize within two weeks. You should not experience pain, but some stinging and pinkness of the skin can be expected, particularly at night when the home care products are used. By day two, the skin may darken in color, feel tighter, itch, and be more sensitive. This is normal and indicates the peel is working. Transient hyper-pigmentation and superficial crusting is possible in areas of inflamed acne. Olive and darker skin tones may experience darkening after peel due to increased shedding of the outer layers. Three to four days after treatment, your skin will peel, flake and/or slough, this can last up to 7 days. The downtime for COSMELAN® can last for up to 7 days.
By day 7, the peeling and flaking should be easing up and the heavy pigmented areas should be significantly diminished. However, in prolonged treatments, this peeling effect will probably not be apparent or it is possible your skin may not peel at all, which does not mean that the treatment is not working or that its efficacy has been diminished. During the first two weeks and post treatment period, you will notice a lightening of the pigmented area and “breaking up” of the melanin. By the end of the second week, you will notice that your skin has a new healthy glow. Your skin will become noticeably brighter directly after treatment and expected to improve within three to four weeks as the deeper skin continues its healing process.
If needed, additional full COSMELAN® treatments can be repeated every 4 to 6 months. The biggest influence on results is the color of your skin— the darker the skin, the longer it takes for the spots to disappear. But regardless of your skin tone, your skin will regain its youthful, shiny, and healthy appearance in about three to four weeks.
Professional peels are increasingly effective with post treatment care. It is important that you follow post treatment instructions and use the at-home maintenance products appropriately over a seven-month period to maximize results. It is crucial to the health of your skin and the success of your peel that these guidelines be followed. Use COSMELAN®-2 maintenance cream for a minimum of 6 months to 1 year. If needed, you can purchase an extra COSMELAN®-2 maintenance cream to use for the remaining seven months, to help keep the melanin from reappearing or from developing new areas of pigmentation. COSMELAN® Depigmentation Peel results are expected to last as long as proper skin care is continued. Use sunscreen daily! I cannot stress this enough. After a few weeks, you will return to the clinic to meet with our treating provider and assess your results.

The most commonly reported side effects include histamine reaction, mild sunburn, temporary redness/erythema and warm to touch from flushing of the skin (up to a few hours). You may experience slight wind burn sensation, photosensitive reaction, irritation, tightness, itching, flaking, peeling, dryness, rough skin, superficial crusting, scabbing, skin discoloration, scarring of the skin, burning, tingling, tenderness, sensitive to touch, discomfort, occasional stinging and/or prickly sensation. Hypo-pigmentation or hyper-pigmentation (usually resolves after a month), freckles may temporarily lighten or permanently disappear in treated areas. These side effects generally resolve within a few days to a few weeks without any further complications.

While Cosmelan® Peel takes more time than some other aesthetic treatments to see the full result, your skin will become noticeably brighter over time. While some patients may see superficial improvement within two weeks after undergoing the initial treatment, radiant skin is apparent as the deeper skin continues its healing process. Remember, dermal collagen remodeling occurs at the cellular level and generally will take 3-4 weeks to see noticeable results. If you stop treatment, your skin will progressively age back to baseline in time. Be mindful of the fact that results vary and research documenting the longevity of results is still ongoing.
